QUARANTINE DIVISION
Protecting the people of Nauru from the entry and spread of pests and diseases
The Quarantine Division is responsible for implementing the Quarantine Act 1908, the Agricultural Quarantine Act 1999, the Animals Act 1982 and the subsidiary legislation made under these Acts.
In doing so, the Quarantine Division protects Nauru’s borders from the entry and spread of pests and diseases. It is the first line of defence that ensures that pests and diseases are detected and contained at the borders.
WHAT WE DO
The Quarantine Division is divided into two subdivisions. These are:
- Trade/Airport Operations
- Seaport Operations
Trade/Airport Operations
Airport operations are responsible for the inspection of aircraft, mail and cargo arriving into Nauru, for illegal goods, animals and plants and invasive species. The trade unit is responsible for all paperwork within the Quarantine Division.
Seaport Operations
Seaport operations oversee all arriving cargo from containers. Any sea vessel arriving in Nauru will be boarded for inspection by quarantine officials along with the official boarding team, which includes Nauru Customs Service, National Police Force and the Department of Health and Medical Services (Public Health Division). All offloaded containers will be inspected by quarantine officials for any infestation, dirt, or any items that may be prohibited entry into Nauru.
